This one was pretty close to home for us.
One of our directors paddles past the Scout Hall most days with his kayaking group, while Kyle, our other director, regularly runs past it on the cycleway. So when friends of ours and parents involved with the Scouts started fundraising to get some much-needed work done to the hall, we were keen to help.
What started as an idea to help them raise some money quickly grew into something much bigger.
The Scouts had secured funding to get the scaffolding erected. Element Roofing donated the roofing labour, Metalcraft supplied the COLORSTEEL roofing materials at no cost, and Vertex Scaffolding stepped up to support the project with the ongoing scaffold rental.
That became especially valuable because the new cycleway was being constructed outside the hall at the same time. Access to the road and footpath was restricted at different stages, creating delays that nobody could really control. Vertex were amazing and simply gave us the breathing room to get the job finished properly.
Having the scaffold there also meant the Scouts could make the most of it. Other work around the hall, including painting, could be tackled at the same time by parents and supporters.
That was probably what we loved most about the project. There was just a fantastic community atmosphere around the place.
For the video, two of the Scouts even stepped in as project managers, complete with hard hats, site inspections and some very serious quality control of our roofing team.
And then came the payment.
One very important parent kept the team supplied with homemade sausage rolls and morning teas, including another delivery after the roof was finished.
So this may officially be the first Element Roofing reroof completed for sausage rolls.
MediaSol did an awesome job of capturing those little moments. Rather than just filming a roofing project, they managed to catch the atmosphere, the personalities and the fun that made the whole experience what it was.
The response afterwards has been pretty special too. Parents and people connected with the Scouts reached out to thank the team, the video took on a life of its own, and we even started hearing from other Scout halls asking if we could come and look at their roofs.
Underneath all the fun, though, this project worked because everyone contributed what they could.

Parents and supporters helped around the hall.
The Scouts supplied the project management.
And one very important parent supplied the sausage rolls.
We’ve had a huge amount of fun with this project and loved being part of it.
Hopefully it won’t be the last.
